Reclaim your life with a Cranial Prosthesis

by Angela Rose

"You have cancer." These three little words have devastated the hearts of millions. Few diagnoses are as chilling to receive or as difficult to accept. As the mind of the patient is overwhelmed with a tumult of questions, one seemingly insignificant rises to the forefront; "Will I lose my hair?"

For  many of us, our hair is our crowing glory, the one feature of which we have always been (though often secretly) proud. Sure, we may battle it and berate it, using blow dryer and curling irons to style it into submission, admiring curly locks when ours are stick-straight and vice versa. But we are as loyal to our stubborn tresses as to our best friend, making up after every disagreement with gently strokes from our brushes.

The loss of our hair from a cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, unavoidable heredity, or a medical condition such as Alopecia or Trichotillomania results in the loss of much more than the biomaterial that protects our scalps. Women who suffer from hair loss may feel demoralized, depressed and begin to withdraw from the world. They may feel anxious or saddened by their appearance, avoiding social situations and activities they once enjoyed.

While some studies have shown that the emotional state of cancer patients actually has no influence on their survival rate, depression and anxiety can severely impede quality of life.

If hair is causing you to feel depressed, anxious and withdrawn, there is something you can do to reclaim your life- and your
insurer may even pay for it.

At Lori's Wigsite we offer Cranial Prosthesis designed for those who have lost their hair due to a medical condition or as a result of medical treatment, most commonly chemotherapy. High end cranial prosthesis like our: Fire & Venice styles.

They superior styles are crafted from 100% European hair, specialized caps and other materials that are designed to provide maximum slippage (like the non-slip skin material used in these caps), and perfectly replicate natural hair-growth patterns.

Will my insurance company pay for the cost of my wig?

Many health insurance policies (but not all) include coverage for Cranial Prosthesis (your wig). If your insurance plan states that it covers prosthesis of any type, and does not state that it excludes Cranial Prosthesis, you may be able to obtain reimbursement of up to 100 percent of the cost.

~If your prosthesis is not covered, you can still claim the cost as a medical tax deduction with proper documentation.

Step 1.  Obtain a written prescription for a full Cranial Prosthesis. The more specific your doctor can be when writing the prescription, the better. For example, he or she may prescribe a "cranial hair prosthesis" for alopecia secondary to chemotherapy or radiation therapy," if you've lost your hair due to either of those treatments.

Step 2. If may be helpful to have your physician write a letter to the insurance company as well stating that the prosthesis is for medical rather than cosmetic needs, while outlining the negative impacts the loss of hair will have on your physical and mental wellbeing.

Step 3. Confirm your insurance benefits. You will have to call your own insurance company direct to see if they cover “cranial prosthesis”. (Don’t mention the word wig).
It may be simplest to call the customer service number found on the back of your card to confirm coverage. If you elect to look through your plan paperwork on your own, pay particular attention to the section on "covered expenses." A cranial prosthesis may be considered a "prosthetic device"

Step 4. Purchase your cranial prosthesis through Lori’s Wigsite. Click here to view our synthetic styles made especially for medical reasons.  Or

After making your selections, and you've added them into your shopping cart, at checkout please check the appropriate box in the "special instructions" section of our order form, so we may e-mail you the required paperwork for submission to your insurance company.

Step 5. Fill out your insurance claim form, and have it signed by your physician if necessary. Submit the claim form, with prescription, Doctor's letter and the cranial prosthesis paperwork/receipt to your insurance company.

At Lori's Wigsite we look forward to serving your needs, while making you look & feel terrific again!
